When the Clocks Fall Back: Simple Ways to Keep Evenings Safe at Home

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, and for many older adults the change is more than an hour on the clock. Suddenly it is dark before dinner. Hallways that were fine at 6 PM in October are dim by 5:30. Evenings stretch long and quiet. For families caring for an aging parent across Greater Austin and the Hill Country, this is a good week to look at home through evening eyes.

Light the path. Walk the route your parent takes from the living room to the bedroom and bathroom after dark. Swap in brighter bulbs where it's dim, add plug-in night-lights along the way, and make sure there's a light switch or lamp they can reach before stepping into a dark room. Motion-sensor lights on the porch and in the hallway are inexpensive and help a lot.

Put lamps on timers. A lamp that turns on by itself at dusk means no one walks into a dark house after an errand or a nap. Timers also make the house look lived-in and welcoming.

Clear the floor. Rugs that curl, cords across a walkway, and shoes by the door are harder to see at night. A quick sweep of the main paths takes ten minutes.

Plan the evening, not just the day. Shorter days can leave some older adults tired, restless, or lonely by late afternoon. An early dinner, a phone call or visit around sunset, and a familiar evening routine can make a big difference.

Check in as the sun goes down. If you can't be there, a neighbor, family member, or caregiver who stops by in the early evening can help with dinner, turn on the lights, and make sure everything is settled for the night.
